Congratulations on your upcoming marriage!

Our hope as a parish community is to help couples grow in their relationship with God and with one another. We are honoured to host your wedding and warmly invite you to share in the worshipping life of the parish, both before and after your wedding day.

Our historic stone church offers a beautiful and reverent setting for a wedding. The tower houses a full peal of eight bells; the stained-glass windows are among the most beautiful in the country; and the organ is the largest in Winnipeg. Inside, the church features rich oak woodwork, comfortable oak pews for your guests, and a red-carpeted centre aisle.

Answers to Common Questions

  • Under Manitoba civil law, both parties must be at least 18 years of age, or have the consent of their parents or guardians.
  • There must be no legal impediment to the marriage (for example, either person already being married, or the couple being too closely related).
  • At least one of the two people being married must be baptized.
  • Both parties must be willing to participate in marriage preparation with the cleric who will preside at the marriage.

The cleric who will preside at the marriage will determine the form of marriage preparation in consultation with both partners. This preparation normally includes one or more conversations exploring the couple’s hopes, expectations, and shared life together — including their domestic, financial, and spiritual life.

At least one of the two people being married must be baptized with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit prior to the marriage. The Anglican Church of Canada requires the permission of the diocesan bishop for an unbaptized person to be married in the church. Regardless of baptismal status, the presiding cleric will meet with you to talk about your lives of faith and the spiritual dimensions of marriage.

The marriage liturgy must conform to the rites of the Anglican Church of Canada. These rites offer both traditional and contemporary language, with a range of options that allow the service to be prayerful, personal, and meaningful.

Yes. Clergy in the Anglican Diocese of Rupert’s Land may officiate at marriages for same-sex couples. As with any wedding at St. Luke’s, we invite you to be in touch to discuss planning and details.

Yes. The Anglican Church of Canada provides a rite for the blessing of a civil marriage. Clergy in the Diocese of Rupert’s Land are able to bless civil marriages of both same-gender and different-gender couples. If you would like to explore the blessing of your civil marriage, please be in touch.

The Anglican Church of Canada understands marriage as a lifelong commitment, entered into with care and intention. At the same time, the Church recognizes that some marriages break down in ways that are harmful to one or both partners, and that divorce can be part of seeking healing and wholeness. We believe in a God of grace, forgiveness, and new life.

In most cases, we are happy to celebrate a marriage following a divorce. As part of marriage preparation, the presiding cleric will invite you to reflect on the previous marriage, including what led to its breakdown and what you have learned from that experience. A brief summary is then shared with the diocesan bishop, who gives authorization for a subsequent marriage.

The Rector of St. Luke’s normally officiates at weddings celebrated in the church. We are, however, happy to discuss the involvement of other clergy in the service, including ecumenical or interdenominational participation. While the Anglican Church of Canada, the Province of Manitoba, and the parish each have regulations governing who may officiate at a marriage, there are often meaningful ways to include other clergy in the ceremony. If you would like to explore what this might look like, please be in touch.

We aim to be as flexible as possible with dates and times, subject to the life and schedule of the parish. Weddings are not normally celebrated during Advent (the four Sundays before Christmas) or during Lent (from Ash Wednesday until Easter). We encourage you to be in touch to discuss your plans, whatever date you have in mind.

The Organist and Choirmaster, in consultation with the Rector, is responsible for the music at wedding services. Our Organist and Choirmaster has extensive experience with weddings and will be glad to meet with you to help choose appropriate music for the service. They will also coordinate the involvement of any soloists or other musicians you may wish to include.
